The region has a good toll-free road network, clearly signposted and well-surfaced. Motorways and dual carriageways link the main cities and towns - whilst smaller country lanes and roads offer a slower pace, taking you deep into the picturesque countryside.

Renting a Car
Car rental can be arranged as part of a fly-drive package, or you can rent a car on arrival in Britain. Prices vary from company to company, and depend not only on the size/model of the car, but the hire location as well (hiring at an airport is likely to be more expensive). Standard rental, usually payable in advance, includes unlimited mileage and insurance. If you require automatic transmission ask when you book. Conditions of car rental vary; generally drivers are expected to have held a full driving licence for at least a year (some companies ask for 2 years). The average minimum age is 23 (lowest 21 years), the average maximum age is 70 (occasionally up to 80 years). A rental booking is usually secured by leaving a credit card number.
